Mommy is a portrait of the artist's mother before and after her unexpected death. Returning to New Jersey to renovate and sell her childhood home, Maggie discovers secret objects linked to her mother's life.
Maggie Lee embraces a collage aesthetic characterized by fluidity and low-tech experimentation, which lends itself well to the use of her biography as artistic material. By exploring memory artifacts and everyday archives, she scrutinizes universal emotions by gathering clues that she distills with restraint and in a dreamlike manner to evoke a strange sensation of simultaneous remembrance and forgetting. However, Maggie Lee does not succumb to nostalgia. While her installations exude a rare sincerity, they reactivate synesthetic sensations in the present: sounds, smells, lights, touch, colors, and glitter all contribute to celebrating what is no longer there.
Born in 1987 in the United States, Maggie Lee is a graduate of the Pratt Institute in New York. Her first documentary film, Mommy (2015), was critically acclaimed for its tactility and evocative power. Maggie Lee lives and works in Brooklyn.
